Many Oro Valley residents are dealing with the frustration of their gym simply closing its doors.  Here today, gone tomorrow. Others are dealing with the frustration of purchasing a gym membership for a gym that still has not opened its doors.

But many parents don’t realize that summer can also mean learning loss. Studies have found that nearly all children lose knowledge over the summer. In fact, when children head back to school in the fall, they are one month behind academically. This loss adds up year after year, especially for students from low-income families who may not have access to summertime enrichment opportunities, like camp, tutoring, and regular trips to the library. This can significantly impact a child’s success in school and in life over the long term.

After attending the Oro Valley town council meeting on May 1, I began to realize an underlying theme to the way that this council operates. Town employees are not a valued asset. 

Marana’s proximity to the Tucson and Phoenix metropolitan areas makes it one of the better-positioned communities in the state. With Interstate 10, the Union Pacific Railroad and two airports within the town’s borders and planning area, Marana has become a hub for people wanting to live or do business in Southern Arizona.

For many seniors and retirees, fitness activities are a regular part of their weekly routine. For others, fitness training is essential and equates to living well as opposed to merely existing. 

Pima Community College East Campus recently was chosen to join the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers nationwide for new jobs in healthcare, education and social services. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
