Every winter, when the Tucson heat lets off just a bit, thousands of people flock to town to buy, sell, and trade precious minerals and other gems at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show. This year, the Gem and Mineral Show will be making its 59th appearance in our fair city. The show is brought to us by the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society, a group dedicated to "Encourage interest and study in geology, mineralogy, lapidary, and allied earth sciences".

    Wednesday, February 1, 2012 4:00 am

Reminded recently by a friend about a canyon hike not yet experienced, my hiking boots were making tracks on Ventana Canyon Trail on a recent mid-January day, with temperatures in the 60s, and the sky cloudless and windless. Two-and-a-half miles ahead with 1,200 feet in elevation gain lies today’s destination, Maiden Pools.

    Wednesday, February 3, 2010 12:00 am

February is a wonderful month in the Old Pueblo. The ponies are running at the Rillito Racetrack (tons of fun), the Gem, Mineral, Fossil and Bead show is all over town (literally tons of fun), The Rodeo Parade marches through (unique fun), and the Rodeo itself happens (those bulls weigh a ton or so), plus, if you really miss snow, you can head up the Catalina Mountains to Mount Lemmon.

  25. article Tucson keeps losing its institutions

    Tuesday, April 22, 2008 11:00 pm

Forty years ago this community had institutions we’ve since lost, or are about to lose. Quarter Horse racing at Rillito Downs, spring training with the Cleveland Indians, a AAA baseball franchise, a thriving movie industry, and something that grew up called the Rock and Mineral Show. All are now gone, going, or threatened.
