The University of Arizona baseball team came home to Tucson Tuesday, celebrating the National Championship they won the night before.

A survey commissioned by the National Institute for Civil Discourse, headquartered at the University of Arizona, indicates that a majority of American voters have lost confidence in the ability of elected leaders to solve the problems facing our country. In fact, fewer than one in 10 American voters has “a great deal” of confidence in elected officials to solve the problems of our country – while twice as many say they have no confidence at all.

Locked securely behind sturdy glass walls, the futuristic facility glows and hums with millions of dollars of some of the world's most sophisticated computers, crunching massive data sets at a rate unthinkable until just recently. This ultramodern facility is The University of Arizona's all new Research Computing Data Center. The Center will be used by UA research investigators to solve society's most pressing challenges and to create new knowledge and opportunity. Later this month, the center will celebrate its formal grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by UA President Gene Sander and other campus leaders.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer, has named Ki Moore, R.N./Ph.D. of the University of Arizona as one of four recipients of the Foundation’s 2012 Nurse Research Grants. Moore will receive a Discovery Award for her research into the effects of Central Nervous System (CNS) treatment on antioxidant level, apoptosis and cognitive abilities in children with leukemia. The award will provide Moore with $100,000 over two years.

On Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1821, J. Ross Browne, the artist and author who wrote about his extensive travels in Arizona, was born in Dublin, Ireland.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1891, Dr. J.C. Handy, physician and former chancellor of the University of Arizona, was shot and fatally wounded by attorney Francis J. Heney during a quarrel at the corner of Pennington and Church streets in Tucson.

On Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1903, the Salt River Valley Water Users Association was organized.

On Wednesday, Aug. 27, 1915, four passengers were killed and 16 were injured when the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix train crashed through the Date Creek bridge.
