  1. article Garden detective: Clues to determine and deter unwanted animals in your yard and garden

    Sunday, April 7, 2013 10:00 pm

(BPT) - Holmes and Watson, Riggs and Murtaugh, Starsky and Hutch – when it comes to sleuthing out just what critter is munching on your spring garden, you may feel like your partnership with Mother Nature is as contentious as any that ever graced the big, or small screen. After all, how are you supposed to fight the “crime” of a decimated garden if you can’t identify the suspect who’s been devouring your daylilies?

  2. article Pet News - Humane Society makes way for litters with Furry Frenzy

    Friday, April 5, 2013 12:09 pm

It happens like clockwork. Every spring, as temperatures rise, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona receives a flood of unwanted and abandoned kittens and puppies. “Litter season” is in full swing and the HSSA reports that it is taking in numerous litters every day. The situation is compounded by the fact that the HSSA has more than 300 animals currently in its care, including many long-term dogs and cats who continue to be overlooked.

To free up limited space for the barrage of youngsters who will soon be available for adoption, the HSSA is offering half-off adoption fees for all cats 5 months and older and all mixed-breed dogs 5 months and older and 25 pounds and over at all locations. As with every animal adopted from the HSSA, each dog and cat will go home microchipped, vaccinated, vetted and spayed or neutered. If you’ve been thinking about welcoming a pet into your family, the HSSA encourages you to find the perfect companion this weekend!

    What: Furry Frenzy adoption weekend

    When: Friday-Sunday April 5-7

Where: All Humane Society of Southern Arizona locations, including the main shelter at 3450 N. Kelvin Boulevard, PAWSH at Park Place and La Encantada and PetSmart on River and Orange Grove and I-19 and Irvington.

Why: Help the Humane Society of Southern Arizona make room for the hundreds of puppies and kittens expected to arrive this summer with half-off adoption fees!

    Thursday, February 28, 2013 4:44 am

(NAPSI)—In the history of efforts to smell good, humans have tried all kinds of inventions. Ancient Egyptians placed scented cones of wax on their heads, while other cultures sipped rose water or chewed fennel seeds. Modern efforts at odor control have led people to “crop dust” their clothes in a haze of wet sprays that may even be worse than the problem they aim to solve.

(BPT) - Most pet owners can tell you that the first few days with a puppy in the house can be a handful, but the job of being a good pet parent does not stop when your new pal sleeps through the night for the first time. After you finish guiding your pup through his earliest life stages, it is important to keep in mind that he will be going through his own version of the “teen” years and will rely on a guiding hand.

    Tuesday, November 20, 2012 11:00 pm

(BPT) - Whether it's guests arriving for a holiday party, visiting relatives or holiday revelers, your home can feel like a revolving door during the holiday season. Unfortunately, all of this added traffic can also bring unwanted dirt and germs that can outweigh holiday cheer. Keep your home looking clean, germ-free and ready to welcome guests throughout the holiday season by establishing a cold-weather cleaning routine.

  11. article Tips To Keep Pets Happy and Healthy

    Wednesday, October 24, 2012 10:00 pm

(StatePoint) Just as you can become tense and stressed out by your daily life, so too can your dog or cat. And pet anxiety is not only unpleasant for your pet and potentially damaging to your home and belongings; it can also lead to a host of other health and wellness problems.

With some simple lifestyle tweaks however, you can make scratching, digging, clawing, whining and crying a thing of the past. Here are some tips to reduce your dog or cat’s anxiety and make their life, and yours, a bit more comfortable:

    Keep Pets Active

“Often, the source of a pet’s anxiety is lack of activity,” says Brian Atkinson, Director of Pet Training at Invisible Fence Brand.  “Whether you have a dog or cat, regular exercise is crucial for a happy, anxiety-free pet.”

Be sure to give pets plenty of opportunities for outdoor exercise. Play games with your cat or dog that are both mentally and physically stimulating.

    Grant More Freedom

If you’re like many pet owners, your schedule means leaving your dog or cat alone for long stretches of time. Granting safe access to your yard while you’re busy can alleviate this burden. Consider installing a pet door combined with a pet containment system.

“With proper training, dogs and cats can safely learn to understand and respect the boundaries of the yard,” says Atkinson.

Highly recommended by veterinarians, professional dog trainers, behaviorists and other pet experts, a pet door can reduce accidents inside the home, increase exercise, stimulate a pet’s senses and provide a change of scenery.

Opt for a programmable electronic pet door that’s customizable. For instance, the Invisible Fence Brand Doorman, which is completely secure against unwanted visitors with an automatic locking device, allows you to set different schedules, boundaries and rules for each pet. More information about such devices is available at www.invisiblefence.com.

     Make Separation Easier

If your pet cries or misbehaves when you leave the house, you may need to take steps to reduce his or her separation anxiety. Desensitize your pet to anxiety-inducing pre-departure cues like putting your shoes on or packing your bag, by regularly doing these actions and staying put.

When you do leave, keep the radio on to keep your pet company throughout the day. Keep your absences short initially, gradually building up the length of time you’re away. And try to avoid making grand entrances and exits. The act of leaving and returning home should be as much of a non-event as possible.

    Maintain their Space

Be sure to regularly clean litter boxes and keep your pet well-hydrated. Automatic litter systems, pet feeders and drinking fountains can help you maintain your pet’s living conditions, even when you aren’t there to do it yourself.

Don’t ignore your pet’s anxiety. A few household changes can take the stress out of being a pet, giving you peace of mind that your furry friend is happy and healthy.

Baby in stroller Falls Into Train Tracks Mom Jumps In Before Train Barrels In Caught On Camera read more

Baby in stroller Falls Into Train Tracks Mom Jumps In Before Train Barrels In Caught On Camera. A stroller carrying a 14-month-old girl rolled off a slanted train station platform and fell onto the tracks Wednesday, but the girl's mother leaped onto the tracks to rescue her with the help other passengers, transit officials said."What it looks like to us is that the mother became distracted by something, didn't apply the brake on the stroller and the stroller was able to move off the platform and onto the tracks," said Scott Sauer, director of system safety for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. The accident happened Wednesday afternoon at the 56th Street station of the Market-Frankford Line in west Philadelphia. The platform at the station is slanted slightly for drainage purposes, Sauer said.Surveillance video shows a woman on the eastbound platform with the girl in a jogging stroller, which slowly rolls forward and topples over onto the tracks about 5 feet below. What initially appears to be the girl flying out of the stroller apparently was just a towel or a bag. The stroller comes to rest on the outer rail, which carries no charge. The woman is seen jumping down and lifting the girl to a man waiting on the platform. Other passengers ran to help, and one used an emergency call box to alert SEPTA police, who held an incoming train at the preceding stop. The infant was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for treatment of a cut on her forehead. Sauer said during a news conference that watching the video was "gut-wrenching.""With the stroller moving at such a slow rate of speed, you know, you want to call out to someone, `Hey, the stroller's moving! Somebody grab the stroller,'" Sauer said. He said the line is one of SEPTA's busiest, with trains running every six to 10 minutes. SEPTA police said no charges will be filed but the accident serves as a reminder for other riders to lock stroller brakes when waiting on platforms.
