In 2012, I have two major wishes to send out to the elected officials who are serving locally, at the State Legislature or in the U.S. Congress — look up the definition of accountability, and learn the art of compromise.
• All the Tea Party constitutionalists who opined on talk radio that Gingrich and Cain would have made a great GOP ticket missing the constitutional provision that the President and Vice President must come from different states.
Great article on library
With the New Year will come the traditional resolutions from many of you, and one of those that is a favorite one to make is to lose weight. Unfortunately, Jan. 1 isn’t a magic day that just changes our habits, thoughts and values. It has to be you, on any day of the year, that makes a conscious decision to get healthier and stick to it.
Thank you for your recent coverage of the Oro Valley Holiday Parade. I feel that it is important that your readers know some of the back story that defines this event. First and foremost, the Oro Valley Parade Committee, Inc., is comprised of two members—Jackie Devery and Pat Jimenez—who volunteer countless hours to ensure that this piece of Americana successfully arrives in our town the second Saturday in December.
The Pinal County Airport Economic Development (AED) Department is responsible for the development and management of two airports in the County. San Manuel Airport is a General Aviation Airport that is located in the town of San Manuel.
As many of you recall, I stopped making New Year’s resolutions years ago because, 1) I had a propensity for breaking most of them within hours after entering the newly arrived annum, and 2) by the end of the first week of the fresh year I realized I really didn’t give a rip about whether or not any of them came to fruition, so the list was tossed into the trash can and forgotten. This ideology seemed to be a valid stress reducer.
The Christmas Season has become far less merry these days, and a lot more busy, crazy, insane and just plain tiring.
As Chairman of Transportation for the Arizona House of Representatives, I feel compelled to weigh in on the decision from the NTSB to recommend a complete ban on PEDs (personal electrical devises) being used in the operation of a motor vehicle.
The holidays are here, the New Year is coming and those of us who serve the Town of Marana are in the mood to celebrate.
Explorer is liberal trash
When I was a kid, one of my favorite parts of the week was chocolate milk Fridays. We had to suffer through only having white milk with our school lunches for four days, and Fridays was a big treat.
Not happy with Voices in Explorer
If you’ve been downtown recently you will find yourself in the midst of a city of tents with a growing population of people participating in the nationwide, Occupy Wall Street movement.
Is a chimichanga a tropical fruit?
When it comes to the big-box stores and retailers, few decisions are made without the marketing research to back it up. This leads one to wonder, when exactly did research show retailers that the American consumer wants to buy and prepare for a holiday months ahead of time?
In 2000, Arizona voters wisely decided it was time to stop Legislative incumbents from drawing their own districts and unfairly guaranteeing their own re-election. We enacted an Independent Redistricting Committee to return that power to the people, ensuring that politicians have to work to earn our vote.
Williams should show his own maps
Recently, Tucson City Council members Steve Kozachik and Karin Uhlich proposed banning texting while driving in town limits. If passed, Tucson drivers who deem it OK to multi-task by driving and sending that all-to-important text could be fined hundreds of dollars at a time.
As a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, I would like to express my thoughts on the Independent Redistricting Commission. For those who do not know, Prop 106 was a voter approved ballot initiative that was passed in 1998 putting the redistricting authority into the hands of an independent commission. The heart of the initiative was to create an independent body that would act in a non-partisan nature.
How many times have we heard someone say, “I’m not perfect but I’m basically honest.” It reminds me of an example provided during my ethics training of a man who had loaned $20,000 to each of three friends. The man told his friends that if he died before they repaid him, each of his friends were to put the payment in his coffin.
Safier went too far with hatred for republicans
Most of the rhetoric we’ve heard from Republican Presidential candidates can be boiled down to one theme. They want to take government apart, piece by piece, and move its services over to the private sector, where their rich contributors can make a profit.
Disappointed Oracle school bond defeated
Most of you know a reasonable amount about Veterans Day. But how much do you know about an organization that was founded in 2005 in response to misguided, reprehensible protests at the funerals of fallen heroes, the Patriot Guard Riders (PGR)?
As a desert community of just over 40,000 residents, the Town of Oro Valley is a community in control of its own water supply. Not having to depend on any other utility for the allocation of water means we are not subject to handouts and cutoffs. We have control over our growth and water resources.
One of Marana’s strongest assets as a community is that we have created a culture of strategic planning. While we always make sure the services we provide — police, water, parks and roads, for example — are top-notch, we also take time to dream about the town’s future and how we will grow to become a community known for its extraordinary long-term vision.
Reader Doesn’t need Gov. Brewer to come home
Most reporting about the current redistricting plans for both the Arizona legislature and the nine seats in the U.S. House put forward by the Independent Redistricting Commission failed to cover the system’s obvious flaws.
Independence, regardless of age or ability, plays a critical role in our quality of life. That’s why, in 1996, the Town of Oro Valley implemented Coyote Run – a transit system to provide elderly and disabled residents a safe, timely and economical mode of transportation.
